A Waterfront Vision: Why New Facilities at Trestle Creek are a Win for Lake Pend Oreille

If you’ve driven past the mouth of Trestle Creek lately, you’ve likely seen the hum of activity. Construction is officially back in motion at the site of the future marina adjacent to the Idaho Club, and for those of us who love spending our summers on the water, this is a reason to celebrate!

While any project on our beautiful Lake Pend Oreille is met with careful scrutiny, it’s important to look at the big picture: our community is growing, and our access to the lake needs to grow with it. Here’s why the ongoing work at Trestle Creek is such a positive step forward for North Idaho.

Meeting the Demand for Lake Access

It’s no secret that boat slips and waterfront facilities are in incredibly high demand. For many families in the Sandpoint area, finding a place to moor a boat or even just access a quality dock can be a multi-year waiting game. By adding a commercial marina—with 80+ slips designed to be available to the general public—this project is directly addressing a major bottleneck in our local recreation scene. It’s also creating an environment for “Boat to Golf” access on Pend Oreille that has been needed for years.

Modern Facilities for a Cleaner Lake

One of the most exciting aspects of this development is the addition of much-needed infrastructure. The plan includes a boat pump-out station, a vital piece of equipment that helps protect the water quality of the lake by giving boaters a responsible way to manage waste. The developer elected not to pursue a Gas Pump at this new facility with the environment in mind. On one of the Islands overlooking the new marina, features an Eagles nest that remains undisturbed.

Furthermore, the project includes shoreline stabilization and the removal of old, decaying wooden piles and docks, replacing them with modern, light-penetrating materials, and decking material that is designed to promote healthy fish habitats. These upgrades aren’t just about aesthetics; they are about using 21st-century engineering to create a cleaner, more sustainable waterfront.

A Commitment to Restoration

What often gets lost in the headlines is the extensive environmental restoration baked into this plan. The developers have worked to reconnect the North Branch of Trestle Creek with the main channel, creating a more natural flow and better fish passage. By removing a perched culvert that acted as a barrier to fish, the project is actually aiming to improve the very habitat that locals and conservationists want to protect.

Enhancing the North Idaho Lifestyle

Sandpoint is defined by its relationship with the water. Projects like the one at Trestle Creek represent an investment in our lifestyle. They create jobs, support local tourism, and—most importantly—provide more ways for families to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty of the lake.

As the construction continues, we can look forward to a future where Trestle Creek is not just a spot we drive past, but a premier destination for responsible recreation. The lake is our greatest resource, and by building modern, thoughtful facilities, we ensure that it remains accessible and enjoyable for everyone for generations to come.

See you on the water!
