They call it the “Antidote to Cabin Fever” for a reason. For ten days every February, Sandpoint transforms from a quiet lakeside town into a glowing, snow-packed festival grounds. Whether you’re here for the high-altitude fireworks or the low-altitude dog races, here is how to navigate the 53rd year of our favorite tradition.

Key Events:

  • The Kickoff: Parade of Lights (Friday, Feb 13, 5:30 PM)
    • Theme: “Fire & Ice.”
    • The Route: Starts at the City Parking Lot (Church St), loops through 2nd Ave and Main, and finishes back on Church.
    • Insider Tip: Stake out a spot near Bella Terra Boutique or Pend Oreille Winery—the winery is hosting a block party immediately following the parade!
  • The Romance: Valentine’s Weekend (Feb 14)
    • If you’re on the mountain: Head to Schweitzer for “Snow Bars” and après-ski music.
    • If you’re in the valley: Book the annual Western Pleasure Guest Ranch sleigh ride and dinner, or catch the Paper Flowers (Fleetwood Mac Tribute) at The Hive.
  • The Finale: Eichardt’s K9 Keg Pull (Sunday, Feb 22, 11:00 AM)
    • This is the carnival’s most famous event. Watch dogs of all sizes—from Chihuahuas pulling beer cans to Huskies pulling full kegs—race down Cedar Street.
    • Pro Tip: Registration starts at 10:15 AM at Eichardt’s Pub. Even if you don’t have a dog, the “pandemonium of cheering” is worth the trip.
    • This event is part of the Sandpoint Winter Carnival and is sponsored by Eichardts, EzyDog, and Selkirk Press. All proceeds from the event benefit Better Together Animal Alliance.
